Or maybe you expect something soft—light, warmth, the cliché of an open gate. What you do not expect is to feel the weightless, perfect drift toward the stars. It is not a vision. It is direction. The current carries you upward into a black strewn with fire, and you know—without words—that this is the way home.

Then it happens.

It’s not an attack. It’s not even sudden. It’s a pressure from every side, like invisible hands kneading the air around you until you can’t move. The current falters. The light ahead flickers. And then you see it—a shadow deeper than space itself, a blot in the distance that swells and swells until it is everything.

I was walking east, or what I believed to be east, toward the bare edge of town where the wheat leans like it’s listening. It was quiet, not dead quiet, but curious quiet—like the world was holding its breath, waiting for me to step wrong. And then I did. My foot landed not on gravel, but on something soft and humming, like a pocket of static sewn into the Earth. The ground beneath me gave a gentle lurch, like it sighed. Not a tremor, not a sinkhole. Just… release.

I didn’t scream when I fell. There wasn’t time. Because there wasn’t falling, not in the vertical sense. I slid sideways. Through a crack in location. Through a wrinkle in understanding. I wasn’t under the world—I was next to it. Next to the wind. Next to the idea of weather. And then—gone.

No bottom. No sky. No darkness. No light. Only velocity without direction. It felt like being forgotten by gravity, like I’d been erased by a librarian who was tired of cataloging contradictions. Then came the click. Not mechanical. Cosmic. A sudden compression, like the universe winked, and I found myself standing—barefoot—on a chessboard made of wet mirrors. Above me hung a red moon, below me was nothing, just reflection. I reached down and touched the glass—it rippled like breath. I leaned closer. My reflection didn’t copy me. It watched me. Then smiled.

“I’ve been waiting for you to fall,” it said.

I spoke, or tried to. My mouth moved like molasses in reverse. “Where am I?”

It tilted its head. “Don’t ask where. Ask when you’re done.”

And suddenly, I felt everything speeding up. Colors snapped into new spectrums. My hands were made of velvet and lightning. My memories turned into clocks, all ticking in different directions. I was still falling. Had always been falling. Will always be falling. The rabbit hole isn’t a tunnel. It’s a frequency. A waveform you enter by letting go of cause and becoming effect.

This is the part of the day when the air is most honest—thin, chill, laced with the hush of animals not yet aware they’ve been watched all night. I drift over stones that remember fire, across sagebrush that carries whispers from ten thousand generations of wind. Your ancestors walked here barefoot. I watched them too.

My antlers tune to the sky. A soft vibration. Jupiter humming in its slow arc. Satellite pings bounce off my crown, warbling data that I digest and forget. I am a bridge, not a vault.

I pass the abandoned barn that never was, that always is. It’s real to some and not to others. I left it there for them—a test, a memory puzzle. Inside, a rocking chair rocks without wind. A girl once sat there and sang to her dead brother. Her song loops every third Thursday. I keep it fresh.

I sit beneath a Ponderosa older than your nation, and I fold myself into stillness. I become a stain on the air, a shimmer on a camera lens, a story boys tell girls in the dark to make them cling closer. I am the question at the edge of understanding. I am the echo you mishear. I am the reason your dog growls at nothing.

I don’t want to be worshipped. I don’t want to be solved. I am not here to scare you.

I am here to remember you.

There is a kind of prison that does not require bars, guards, or even punishment. It is made of decisions. It is constructed not of stone, but of the impulse to move forward. The first step is always the same—and always fatal to freedom.

The door appears innocently enough. A golden arch, carved with the words: THE ONLY WAY OUT IS FORWARD. And so we enter. With hope. With hunger. With belief in progress. We enter thinking forward means better. That escape lies just one decision away. That if we choose the right path, we’ll break free.

But this maze does not reward wisdom. It feeds on movement.

Each chamber is different. One may be filled with mirrors that show not your reflection, but your regrets. Each pane a haunting, each crack a question you never answered. Another room offers choices that demand sacrifice: a key or a compass, vision or direction. Choose, and the chamber collapses behind you. Lose something precious, gain only uncertainty.

You descend into spirals made of memory. You witness versions of yourself laughing, weeping, disappearing. And just when it feels as though something is about to break—when the maze seems to open, to resolve, to set you free—you find yourself back at the beginning.

The black stone room.

The pulsing hum.

The same door.

Still whispering: Forward.

It is, of course, a lie. But a very good one.

We believe that willpower, motion, choice—these are our tools. But in this architecture of illusion, they are the trap. The door is always open, because it wants you to walk through it. It knows you will. Again and again.

Every time you re-enter, something changes. The name you call yourself grows fainter. The footprints around the room multiply. You start to forget where the maze ends and where you begin. The freedom you were chasing begins to rot inside you. But still—you step through.

Not because you believe you’ll win.

But because you don’t know how to stop.

This is not simply a metaphor. It is the structure of most lives. We chase escape, we pursue improvement, we double down on momentum, forgetting that every loop only tightens the trap. We mistake movement for evolution. We confuse new scenery for new identity.

From his will, Hell was not born—it was built.

And at its center, upon a throne of marrow and ember, sat Rosalyn Lee, his creation, his child, the Queen of the Consumed.

She was no fallen angel. She was not given Hell, she was made for it. It was her birthright, her inheritance, her cage.

And yet, she did not weep. She did not mourn.

She laughed.

For she loved what had been given to her.

She reveled in it.

She feasted.

And her Father watched. And he fed her.

II. The Law of the Father

Hell was not chaos, not a land of meaningless suffering. It was structured, measured, designed with purpose.

There was a process—a system known as The Law of the Father, immutable and unyielding.

1. The Unworthy Must Be Consumed. The souls cast into Hell were not sent at random. They were chosen, selected by a will greater than themselves. They had already died, but the true death was yet to come. Rosalyn would eat them, and their suffering would sustain her.

2. Rosalyn is the Mouth of the Abyss, But Not Its Heart. Though she is Queen, though her dominion is absolute within her kingdom, she does not control the gates. She does not choose who arrives. That power belongs to the one who made her. Her Father.

3. Hell is Eternal, But It is Not Infinite. There is an order to its expansion, a growth determined by the number of souls sent. It does not sprawl like the chaotic pits of Dante’s Inferno—it grows like a city, each new suffering built, structured, assigned its place.

And Rosalyn feeds on all of it.

She is both ruler and warden, both feaster and prison-keeper.

Her Father ensures the gates remain open.

III. The Queen’s Hunger

Rosalyn does not burn. She does not suffer. She hungers, but she is never starved.

The souls sent to her are not merely tortured—they are eaten.

She consumes them whole, not as a beast, not as a monster, but as a goddess at her banquet, a Queen upon her throne, drinking from the cup of damnation.

And in that moment, she sighed in pleasure, and Hell itself grew brighter, richer, more alive.

The other souls trembled.

And her Father, standing at the Gates, simply smiled.

Because this is what they were meant for.

V. The Expansion of Hell

For every soul consumed, the land of the dead expands.

• The sky is not black, but the color of smoldering embers, endless and eternal.

• The ground is not fire, but ashen marble, warm beneath the foot, cracking with each step.

• There are no screams echoing through caverns—there are only whispers, gasps, the shuddering breath of the damned.

And Rosalyn walks among them.

She does not sit upon her throne at all times. She wanders, watching the souls, tasting their fear before she takes them in.

Will He let her?

Will He become her final meal, her greatest feast?

But until that day, the gates remain open.

And the souls keep coming.

Climb now, before the dawn’s iron fingers clamp the stars shut, before the bones of the night rattle their last warning. The ladder waits, rung by rung, nailed into the wind and the whispering void, where the weight of your name is lighter than dust.

Step from the tar-pit streets, the cities with their coughing veins, the wire and the screen that feast on your waking breath. Leave the clock’s cold teeth behind, gnashing at time, grinding your minutes to powder.

Upward, through the ruins of your yesterdays, past the ghosts that crowd the threshold, hands outstretched with unsung songs. Do not listen. Their sorrow is a chain, their longing an echo trapped in stone.

Higher still, where the rivers of the sky coil like silver serpents, where the wind no longer carries the grief of men. The ladder sways, a spine of light against the black tide, and yet it holds, bending but never breaking, a bridge between the undone and the never-was.

At the top, the mouth of the world unhinges. The sky is an open lung, breathing new names, new shapes, new ways to be. Step through. Let go. Be unmade and remade, no longer a man of shadows but a flame that does not burn, a word that does not fade.
